Bringing the latest technology to rural Winona:
Ridge-Runner is working hard to bring high speed internet access to rural Winona. With our Wireless Internet access, Ridge-Runner will be able to service a larger area than DSL or Cable and it is nearly 50 times faster than a 26K dial-up service.

What is Wireless Internet Access?
Wireless Internet access is exactly what it says, "wireless". Wireless Internet uses radio signals rather than physical lines to transmit data from your house or business to Ridge-Runner Wireless Point of Presence. This connection is a bi-directional connection meaning that data is sent and received without the need of phone lines, telephone companies or cable companies.

How Fast is Ridge-Runner Wireless Internet?
We guarantee at least 384K speeds at all times but not limited to. Speeds currently are at times up to 1400K (Current dial-up services offered through the phone companies have an average speed of 26K.) Some basic cable modem packages with comparable pricing provide up to 384K but no more and comparable DSL packages provide up to 256K but no more. Although the availability of these other services are extremely limited in rural areas.

What Does the Equipment look like?
There are two parts to the wireless internet radio when your home is located at a distance from the tower or repeater tower, a small outdoor unit or a small indoor unit. The outdoor unit (water sealed and operable to -50° F) includes an antenna and amplifier in a single unit. This unit is mounted on your house or rooftop and a cable run into the home and connected to the computer much like cable or phone services. The indoor unit, most often placed near a window as the signal is able to penetrate through glass better than walls, and is connected to your computer via a standard network cable. A network adapter/ethernet controller is required to interface the radio to the computer. Ridge Runner Internet Services can provide and install this adapter at a low cost if necessary. There is no need to run power to the radio location as the power is provided over the standard network cable.

What Are Some Benefits?
Speed is the biggest benefit to Wireless Internet. As the Internet becomes more content rich, pages with audio, video, and other multimedia, a high speed connection is needed in order to properly view and enjoy. Video Conferencing from your home computer, listening to MP3s in real time, and to send and receive files at lightening speeds are all benefits of wireless internet. Other benefits include the ability to talk on the phone while on the Internet, no more frustrating disconnects due to phone line issues. Wireless Internet technology brings high speed access to rural and smaller population communities introducing affordable high speed access!

What are the Limitations?
Wireless Internet Connections require direct radio line of site or NLOS (near line of sight). Each new request for service will require a site survey to determine if the service will operate in that location. As a general rule, if you can see the tower or one of our repeater towers then you can get the service, although not limited to depending on the distance and type of obstruction.

Will I get a busy signal on my phone when using the internet?
No. This connection does not use your modem or phone lines. This connection is always on so there is no need to worry about dialing, busy signals, or disconnects. There is no need to worry about bad weather as it will not affect your connection unlike satellite connections.

How Long Does it Take to Install?
When you request the service Ridge-Runner will survey your site. Once your site has been approved you will be added to the installation schedule and Ridge-Runner will install ASAP. The time it takes to install is also dependent on whether an indoor or outdoor unit is required.
